The MITTS Altair company was owned by Ed Roberts. Roberts sold the company and went to medical school and is now a practicing MD. Although the 680 was "pre-announced" on the cover of the November, 1975 issue of Popular Electronics (following the similar introduction of its big brother, the Altair 8800), the headline trumpeting "THE FIRST MOTOROLA 6800 COMPUTER PROJECT" was not the whole truth. Ironically, page 5 of the same magazine carried an ad for the Sphere, a 6800 based computer available in kit form for $860, and page 89 advertised the SWTPC 6800 kit at $450. It's hard to say which computer actually shipped first in quantity. MITS offered a discount for orders placed before December 31, 1975, but the ads offering the discount featured a picture of the mock up 680 that appeared on the Popular Electronics cover (yes, the 680 was a mock up, just like the 8800 photo on the magazine cover the previous January). Also, the "December 31, 1975" discount ads appeared in Byte magazine as late as February 1976. These established groups minister to people, and fill a great need. Sometimes though, they need a helping hand, monetary assistance or even a word of encouragement to continue the good work. David KK4WW and Gaynell KK4WWW Larsen, Dee Dannewitz Wallace KG4VMI and associate Melissa Thompson of FAIRS (Foundation for Amateur International Radio Service, Ltd.), arrived in Dominica January 19th 2010 and the project work began!-----------While we were in Dominica, Clems J73CI mother, Mable Moir Ma James (1912-2010) passed away at the age of 97. This was a big deal in Dominica, because she was a Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Communications and Works, even served as acting Premier over a period of about a week she helped the ordinary man and was generally loved by the people. She received a state funeral, which David, Gaynell and members of DARCI attended. You may wish to hear more, or find out how you might be involved in project work and/or support.
